Chukauni!! (Nepali Potato Yogurt Salad)

Chukauni (Nepali Potato Yogurt Salad) is a very popular dish in western region of Nepal. It is a must have dish on every events and occasions. From what I remember, Chukauni is the very first dish I made and according to my mum, I was six at that time ;) and may be that is why I make this dish almost everyday and is one of my favorites. It is delicious and at the same time so easy to make. Here is the recipe and pictures showing step by step process to prepare this delicacy:

Voila! Chukauni Perfection!! =D>

Prep time: 10 min(s) Cook time: 10 min(s) Total time: 20 min(s)

Things you will need:
  • 2 Potatoes
  • 1 Serrano Pepper finely chopped (add more if you want)
  • 1 red onion finely sliced (medium size)
  • Fenugreek seeds (2 tea spoons)
  • Oil (4-6 table spoons)
  • Yogurt (1 and half cup)
  • Lime juice or fresh lime (2-3 table spoons)
  • Salt (according to your taste)
  • Red Chili Powder (1-1and half table spoon)
  • Turmeric Powder (2 tea spoons)
  • Cilantro/Green onion finely chopped for garnishing.
Note: You can skip Serrano and Red Chili Powder.

  1. Microwave potatoes for 6 minutes ( you can boil if you would like. I am too lazy). Cut them in a cube size.
  2. Put all of the mentioned ingredients together. Except fenugreek, oil, cilantro/green onion and lime juice.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Once heated, add fenugreek seeds and wait until it is brownish black. Pour it over the ingredients (Be Extremely Careful while doing this).
  4. Add lime juice and yogurt. Give all these ingredients a good mix. Also add 1-3 table spoons of water and mix to give the mixture a smooth texture.
  5. Finally, Garnish with finely chopped cilantro or green onion.
